Berlin, 1941. Five friends eager to become heroes in an adventure that will change the face of Europe - and that will forever change them as well. Level-headed, highly decorated officer Wilhelm is off to the eastern front with his younger brother Friedhelm, a sensitive dreamer more interested in literature than warfare. Deeply in love with Wilhelm is Charlotte, a young nurse who looks forward to serving in the Wehrmacht, also on the eastern front. While Greta is a talented singer who longs to become another Marlene Dietrich, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor still cannot convince his parents to leave Germany… Valor and courage come to the fore, but also betrayal - of values, beliefs, humanity. Friedhelm turns into a soulless killing machine… Wilhelm deserts his troops and is court-martialed… Charlotte's Nazi ideology crumbles when she betrays a Jewish nurse helping the German army… Greta obtains papers for Viktor's escape by selling herself to an SS colonel. They and millions of others wanted to be heroes; but none of them could imagine what the war would ultimately do to them and to the rest of the world.
Five friends go out to war and promise each other to be back for Christmas.
This movie was expertly directed and had tons of historical consultants, that didn't prevent it to stink to heaven high when it came one simple thing: HISTORICAL ACCURACY.

Oh sure, all the military vehicles are correct, and every ribbon on the German uniform is done just right, but that's NOT what I'm talking about. The historical accuracy of the human kind is COMPLETELY MISSING.

The main heroes (presuming from the title, the average everyday Germans) are portrayed as innocent 20-year olds, apparently completely oblivious to the Nazi propaganda that was avalanching Germany for the last 8 years. They are friends with a Jewish tailor and see absolutely nothing wrong it. After all, what could be wrong with having a Jewish friend in 1941's Germany, right? Then comes the soap opera and the war drama. Don't get me wrong. Both of these are expertly done, and quite engaging in their own respects. But I feel like the producers desperately tried to appeal to BOTH sexes equally, unnecessarily making some episodes too short while others too long. That however is a minor quibble.

The major quibble of mine is the unabashed and naked attempt by the producers to equate the German atrocities in the WWII with those of other countries. Russia, Ukraine, and, particularly, Poland…

The Polish partisans are portrayed as Jew-hating assholes and provide a nice opposite to the clean-cut, multi-kulti main characters who would never say a bad thing about Jew, much less kill him… Surely that's a historical fact… Right?? RIGHT???
"Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" is the most famous miniseries from Germany in a long time and even many film lovers abroad have heard about it by now. It consists of 3 episodes 90 minutes each, which means a total runtime of 4.5 hours. Let me start with a criticism. The German title does not fit at all as none of the characters in the film become father or mother. Maybe that is also why they went with something completely different for the international market: "Generation War". However, that is an even worse title. Maybe they could have gone with a reference to this miniseries being a grown up version of the famous children's books about five friends. I don't know. "Generation War" sounds like this is some cheesy Roland Emmerich action movie. The five central actors are played of some of the biggest rising stars from Germany. I have to say that I am not particularly a fan of the three male actors, especially Trepte who I don't see much talent in, but who was also better than usual here. Bruch I am not particularly familiar with. The two female actors are doing a good job too. Especially Miriam Stein is quickly growing into a favorite. Throughout the movie, with people dying around the quintet all the time, especially during the ending I was wondering who of the five is going to survive. My guess was Bruch's and Stein's characters and I came pretty close. 4 out of 5 correct. Admittedly, at one point I thought they all are going to die and that was when we see their photo and five bullets next to it. Especially the fate of Schüttler's character was fairy predictable. In the smaller roles, there are also quite a few well-known German actors: Christiane Paul (whose character would have deserved an own movie, her appearance at the end was just a bit too absurd and random for my taste), Alina Levshin, Sylvester Groth and a couple more.

This movie won so many awards in the last two years. It was a warm welcome for the director who has not been too famous before that, almost a nobody. The writer has a bit of a better-known body of work, including the movie "Dresden" also dealing with World War II and a couple "Tatort" and "Polizeiruf 110" episodes under his belt. But back to this movie, the five main characters are a decorated soldier, his brother who is not very true to party principles, an ambitious singer, a nurse who believes in the "Endsieg" and finally a Jew. We follow them throughout the entire movie and get to know them better as well as the people they meet. Also we find out about the transformations they are making. Early on, they are all supposed to be likable, but as the action continues you find out more and more about their flaws. Sympathy for some of the characters, if not all of them, still stays a factor, however. Trepte's character is probably the only one who is not entirely different character-wise at the end of the miniseries. I will not go much into detail about their transformations. Just watch the film if you want to know.

In my opinion the first part of the trilogy was the best, the last the second best and the middle part the weakest. The middle part is very much about the transformation of Schilling's character and I have to say that did not wow me entirely. It just did not feel too credible that he would make such a 180° turn looking at who he was early on. Yes, war changes people, but still… The first and second part end with one of the main characters being interrogated by the Nazis. These 4.5 hours have no real wow-moments where I would say it is a must-see, but the last scene of the movie, the final meeting of the three survivors was a highlight though, also how they put it in contrast to their initial meeting early in the movie. All in all, I recommend watching it, but you can probably decide the best for yourself. If you consider giving this a look, you will probably have seen some of the uncountable World War II movies from Germany and know if these are your cup of tea.
Overly melodramatic but fairly engrossing.
I watched it on tv and I cant stop thinking about it.
